How Overhaul's FraudWatch Stopped a ~$300K Load From Leaving With a High-Risk Carrier

Driver-level fraud screening at pickup, catching what the inbound gate missed on a weekend shift

the challenge

Fraudulent pickups do not announce themselves. A driver arrives with paperwork that scans clean, and the load is gone before anyone connects the carrier to prior incidents. On an overtime weekend shift at one Southern California distribution site, the inbound gate did not run its normal FraudWatch screening, and a driver was admitted to collect a pre-loaded trailer.
‍

The Gap:

  • The depot does not currently operate at weekends
  • In-gate screening keeps high-risk carriers off the yard
  • With the gate dark, the carrier reached a loaded trailer unchecked

The only remaining checkpoint was the outbound pickup process.

the solutions

At the outbound pickup process, the site tablet ran FraudWatch, which returned six bad-actor alerts against the carrier. The contracted site security guard escalated to the provider's safety lead rather than releasing the load. The safety lead held the driver on site, reviewed the alerts, and decided not to release the freight. The driver was sent to back up to a door and left without the load. One week later, the same DOT number showed nine threats.

‍

the results

The load was not released. With the inbound gate unscreened, the pickup-point check was the only control left, and it held: the Overhaul account team valued the stopped load at approximately $300,000. The provider remains at one lost trailer for the year, and a majority of its brokers now screen through the FraudWatch customer portal before sending a driver to its sites.

‍RECOMMENDATIONS
"The alerts were right there on the tablet, and the guard read them and picked up the phone before that trailer moved. That is the whole point of putting screening in the hands of the people at the gate. Thank you to him for taking action. This is exactly what I talk about when it comes to teamwork to prevent theft." - Safety Lead, Global Third-Party Logistics Provid
